{break-in}
my second night sleeping in my big empty room in the big empty basement of the new house there was somewhat of a scary incident. i had just got off skype with my parents, and was trying to fall asleep. it was around midnight. the children were at their dads overnight and i had come down to my room a few hours previous so i wasnt sure where the mom was. as i layed there thinking i heard pounding on the front door. of course i wasnt going to go get it. few minutes later there is more pounding. again, not getting out of bed at midnight in a strange town to answer the door. few minutes later the pounding is even louder and goes on for a longer period of time. at this point i was pretty scared, little did i know it was about to get worse. the phone rang two different times after the door-pounding stopped. i thought that was the end of it. but no.. i heard a door open and footsteps walking around upstairs. four of them, and they were loud. men footsteps. the voices were calling out "hello is anybody here? hello?" what was i supposed to do in this situation? run upstairs and say "here i am please shoot me and steal everything we have!" little dramatic i know, but thats what was going through my head. my natural instinct was the hide under my covers. so i did. my heart was pounding out of my chest. again there was yelling to see if anybody was home. then i heard closet doors being open and shut along with rummaging through things. next thought "please dont rob me, i have my whole life sitting in suitcases right here." through my blanket and the crack in the door i could tell they had found the door to the basement because of the flashlights light coming down the stairs. i prepared myself for the worst. they searched the basement for a while before finding my room and then they came it. the light found my bed and i sat up to confront them. standing in front of me were two police officers. they asked urgently who i was and where the owner of the house was. i didnt know. they told me to find her. so i went in her room, had to wake her up to tell her the police were searching her house, keep in mind i met this women the day prior. the policemen told her they came in because the neighbor reported the garage door open. p.s. there is no neighbor on the side of the house where the garage faces, only tennis courts. then they left. and that was it. it was the scariest experience. and weirdest. everyone in utah leaves their garage doors open! no one even cares! most people leave their houses unlocked all the time. we're still trying to figure out how an open garage door gives police a right to search the house. i didnt sleep the whole night.
im not in utah anymore folks.
